I need to find a therapist.
Between post-grad blues, ending years-long college relationships, dealing with anxiety after a freak car accident, and the general transition into adulthood, I have to get my mental right.
Don't get me wrong, I've found a great starting job for my career, I'm deepening new friendships, and I've started driving again. But still, I do not take this point in my life lightly. I understand just how quickly emotions can slip, and I want to be prepared in case something goes wrong.
Why's a therapist good? I know some Black people say that we as a culture don't believe in therapy, but that's never been my experience, even growing up with religious grandparents and living in the hood. Even at my conservative HBCU, most of my classmates were either seeing a shrink, or knew they needed to and were planning to go.
For me, they give ideas for coping mechanisms and exercises, as well as just being there as a listening ear. The best part is, they don't tell your business! They take NOTHING personally! Your sadness doesn't affect them! It's nice to have that kind of help.
