I'm a woman, a Black woman, and I love other Black women. BUT. I have got a bone to pick with some of y'all. Women's empowerment mixers, conferences, and kits are popping up everywhere, usually led by women with too much disposable income and questionably vague advice. I am not speaking for all women's empowerment efforts, as some do offer valuable tools and genuine advice, but many do not cater to the average woman who's simply looking to make some extra money or turn her life in a new direction.
Mimosa brunches and photo booths are cute, but let's get down to why we're really here - the betterment of the Black woman.
I won't delay on the question I've come to deliver - how can women uplift other women when the women who need the most empowerment can't even afford to get into the room? Why is there such a steep price on sisterhood and education? How can the collective get ahead without lifting as we climb? I shouldn't have to pay $350 to be "empowered".
In my wildest dreams, more women's empowerment services will simply do the job they claim to do. I want to network in my community with women who need business and social resources, at a lower cost. Mimosa brunches and photo booths are cute, but let's get down to why we're really here - the betterment of the Black woman. I'm not simply talking the talk without having real plans in the works (my first FREE networking event is set in stone for September), and I challenge my other sisters to do the same without making a come-up off everyone else.
