I haven’t read the bible front to back but I have read most of it. In all my reading I never got the vibe that Jesus owned any property. If he was around today he would probably have a tiny home made from an old bus. Jesus was focused on the work of miracles and spreading the gospel and he didn’t need much to do it.
Fast forward to 2018, and it seems as if every black church in a 50 mile radius has a building or renovation fund. These aren’t the historic churches either that require a certain amount of preservation and upkeep to be okay. These are buildings of churches that aren’t even 20 years old.
Case in point, my home church has only been in this building for about 6 years. It is nice but I see the case for minor renovations. The fundraising goal is 250k and I’m pretty sure that will not cover the total cost of what the board wants to do.
I don’t see the need for a larger and improved building when the population of the congregation is stagnant or dwindling. Also, I don’t believe churches should be so obsessed with buildings. I think they should be so engaged in their communities, they forget about a leaky faucet or light that isn’t completely hooked up to the circuit board.
Could you imagine what would happen if all the churches consolidated and combined their building funds to open a home for abused women and their families, or a counseling center for survivors of sexual assault, or a subsidized day care facility for working parents who can’t afford traditional day care services?
I think that’s what Jesus would do.
